HiPP, Europe’s largest organic infant formula and baby food producer, has steadily grown its market share in Hong Kong and mainland China. Stefan Hipp, the fourth-generation leader of this German family business, has recently visited Hong Kong. During his stay, he shared insights into the brand’s legacy, market strategies, and vision for promoting organic lifestyles in the region.
A timeless legacy of organic farming excellence
As CEO and a passionate advocate for organic agriculture, Stefan Hipp’s leadership is deeply rooted in his family’s 125-year commitment to sustainable farming. “My grandfather realized early on that conventional farming, with its reliance on chemicals, posed significant risks, especially for baby food,” he explained. Inspired by Hans Müller, a pioneer of the organic movement, the family began integrating organic practices into their business, a tradition that continues today.
Stefan Hipp combines his academic background in agricultural science with over a century of family experience. Beyond his corporate role, he remains actively involved in organic farming, spending significant time in the fields. “Healthy soil is the foundation of high-quality products,” he emphasized. “We implement crop rotation systems to rejuvenate the land, ensuring the purity and health of our crops without relying on artificial fertilizers.”
Fostering environmental stewardship through rigorous organic practices
HiPP’s organic philosophy extends globally, with the company setting higher standards than those mandated by European organic regulations. Every potential farming partner undergoes rigorous testing, from soil analysis more than 260 quality checks, ensuring full transparency from farm to finished product. “While only 1.5% of the world’s farmland is organic today, we believe in its potential to restore soil quality and address pressing global challenges,” said Stefan Hipp. “Organic farming is not just about improving health but protecting the environment for future generations.”
Pioneering leadership in the organic infant food market
HiPP’s unwavering commitment to quality and sustainability has cemented its position as the leading organic infant food brand in Europe. With over one-third of the market share in Europe’s organic infant formula category and nearly 50% of the total infant formula market in Germany, HiPP is a trusted name among parents. “European consumers understand that choosing organic means prioritizing safety, health benefits, and higher nutritional value,” Stefan Hipp noted. “The demand for organic products is driven by their safety and taste, as well as their environmental benefits.”
This success extends to Hong Kong, where HiPP dominates the organic infant formula market with a 59% share—five times larger than its closest competitor. The brand’s reputation for quality and affordability has made it a favorite among local parents and a staple in private hospitals. HiPP has also worked to ensure its organic products remain competitively priced, allowing more families to access high-quality nutrition.

Stefan Hipp acknowledged that entering the Hong Kong market presented challenges, particularly due to differences in regulatory requirements. “European standards focus on average nutritional values and avoid artificial additives, while Hong Kong emphasizes minimum nutritional requirements,” he explained. Despite these challenges, HiPP has tailored its offerings to meet local regulations, solidifying its position as a market leader.
Venture forward: expanding in Hong Kong, Macau and mainland China
With the relaxation of China’s family planning policy in 2021 to allow three children, demand for high-quality infant nutrition has surged. Chinese parents, increasingly aware of product safety and quality, are driving growth in the premium infant formula market. HiPP has responded by adapting its products to meet the specific nutritional needs of Chinese infants.
“Our team of nutrition experts has developed formulas that cater to the precise needs of different age groups, combining cutting-edge scientific research with the highest-quality organic ingredients,” Stefan Hipp said.
HiPP’s efforts in China extend beyond product development. Since entering the market in 2011, the brand has introduced a comprehensive range of organic baby food, including milk powder, cereals, purees, and juices. HiPP’s dedication to quality and transparency has earned the trust of Chinese parents.
While challenges remain, Stefan Hipp is optimistic about the brand’s future in Greater China. “We are committed to building long-term relationships with parents in mainland China and Hong Kong, providing them with reliable, high-quality nutrition for their children,” he said. “Our goal is to become the most trusted organic baby food brand in the region.”
Promoting organic lifestyles in Hong Kong
HiPP’s commitment to organic living is clearly demonstrated through its long-standing support for initiatives such as its role as the main sponsor of the ‘Organic Day.’ Recently, Stefan Hipp served as a guest of honor at this event, where he engaged with local officials and community leaders. Additionally, the HiPP Award is presented to honor individuals who have made significant contributions to organic development in Hong Kong.
Stefan Hipp believes Hong Kong has the potential to influence organic trends in mainland China. “By promoting organic farming and lifestyles in Hong Kong, we can create a model for the region,” he said. He also noted the growing awareness of healthy nutrition among Hong Kong’s younger generation, which is encouraging for the organic movement.

However, Stefan Hipp emphasized the need for clearer organic regulations in Hong Kong to build consumer trust. “The lack of unified standards creates confusion,” he explained. “A tailored organic standard for Hong Kong, leveraging existing regulations from Europe and the US, would enhance credibility and growth.”
Therefore, Stefan Hipp has taken a proactive stance in collaborating with government officials and key industry stakeholders to drive significant improvements in local regulatory requirements for organic products. Notably, he has met with influential figures such as Lai Kin-ming, the Director of Agriculture, Fisheries, and Conservation, and Wong Woon-chung, the Director of the Hong Kong Organic Resource Centre, to champion these vital changes.
Balancing sustainability and commercial success
As a family-owned business, HiPP prioritizes long-term sustainability over short-term profits. “We believe economic, social, and environmental aspects must work together to foster growth,” Stefan Hipp said. “Our mission is to educate consumers about the benefits of organic farming while ensuring we remain responsible and not overly profit-driven.”
HiPP’s philosophy has resonated with consumers worldwide, positioning the brand as a leader in organic infant nutrition. With its strong presence in Europe and growing influence in Asia, HiPP is well-equipped to continue its mission of promoting sustainable agriculture and organic living.
As Stefan Hipp concluded, “Our focus is on creating a better future for the next generation. By providing safe, nutritious, and sustainable products, we aim to make a lasting impact on families and the environment.”
