The young victim, employed at a Wan Chai hotel, was one of two men stabbed near a chess table in the park around 12.30pm on Yuk Yat Street.
His colleague, 37-year-old Fok, has been upgraded from critical to serious condition but is still under hospital care.
Yan's employer quickly issued a statement expressing deep concern, confirming they are supporting his family with whatever assistance is needed during this ordeal.
The attack unfolded in broad daylight at the popular public park, where the victims—friends with no apparent link to the assailant—were left bleeding profusely.
A 31-year-old man was arrested shortly after, with officers confirming he was a familiar face among park regulars but had no ties to triads or organized crime.
Early inquiries turned up no prior grudges between the suspect and the victims, leaving investigators puzzled about the motive.
Police investigations with the suspect's acquaintances have raised red flags about potential mental health struggles, though medical records show no history of psychiatric treatment.
Police are now digging deeper to piece together if any interaction occurred between the victims and the attacker just before the stabbing.
In addition, the weapon—a knife—remains lost after the suspect tossed it into the sea.
Recent typhoon aftermath has stirred up rough waters and heavy silt, turning the recovery operation difficult, with police planning to resume the search later.
