To mark the 80th anniversary of the War of Resistance victory, Secretary for Justice Paul Lam Ting-kwok visited a historical site to recount the critical intelligence work performed by local heroes.
In a video shared on a social media platform, Lam stood at the 8 U Lam Terrace in Sheung Wan, which once served as an observation post for the Hong Kong and Kowloon Independent Brigade of the East River Column.
To assist the Allied forces in preparing for a major counter-attack in 1944, personnel were deployed to monitor Japanese naval activities over Victoria Harbour.
Among those stationed was Wen Shuyun, an intelligence agent in the Brigade, who lived on the fourth floor of U Lam Terrace. Wen used binoculars to observe enemy vessels at anchor, meticulously documenting their positions.
The intelligence was secretly reported to the Dongjiang Column Command Department and forwarded to the Allies.
Ten days later, the 14th Air Force successfully utilized the intel to target and destroy Japanese warships, establishing the groundwork for victory in the war.
While U Lam Terrace has since been transformed into high-rise buildings, Lam stressed that the marks of history remain indelible, even for those who have not experienced the ravages of war.
Highlighting various preserved historical sites from the War of Resistance, Lam noted that they all serve as reminders that the hard-won peace should be cherished and passed down through generations.
