HK households to see lower electricity bills next month

A regular three-person family customer of HK Electric will be paying around HK$30.8 less in electricity bills next month, after the power company announced it was lowering the fuel clause charge to 32.9 cents per unit of electricity in September.

In a statement released on Monday, HK Electric announced that its Fuel Clause Charge (FCC) for September will be reduced to 32.9 cents per unit, down from 36.7 cents in August. 

This adjustment marks a significant drop of 25.4 percent compared to the charge of 44.1 cents recorded in January of this year.

As a result of this decrease, the average net tariff per unit of electricity—which combines the Basic Tariff and the FCC—will fall to 155.8 cents. This represents a reduction of 11.2 cents, or 6.7 percent, since January when the net tariff stood at 167 cents per unit.

The company illustrated the impact using the example of a typical three-person household that consumes 275 units of electricity monthly.

After applying the Government's electricity subsidy, the total bill in September will amount to HK$281.4. This is a decrease of HK$30.8, or 9.9 percent, compared to the HK$312.2 charged in January.

Despite the positive trend, a spokesperson for HK Electric struck a note of caution, citing ongoing geopolitical uncertainties that could lead to volatile fuel prices for the remainder of the year.

The company pledged to continue managing fuel costs prudently to provide stable and reliable service to its customers.
