Portable fans exhibit significant variation in airflow rates at the highest fan speed setting, with differences exceeding 1.5 times between the highest and lowest performing units evaluated, according to findings from the Consumer Council.
The consumer watchdog conducted an assessment of 18 rechargeable portable fans, priced between HK$58 and HK$339. The evaluation included 16 handheld models and two neck-mounted designs.
The handheld fans were further categorized based on weight into two groups: heavier models (204g to 277g) and lighter models (93g and 189g).
Among the models tested, six received a rating of 4.5 points for overall performance. The rating was determined through an examination of various functions, including airflow rate, safety, charging efficiency, energy consumption, and battery lifespan.
Some models with higher claimed battery capacities were found to store less energy and deliver less total airflow after a full charge than another model with a lower claimed battery capacity.
Meanwhile, it is discovered that some models' airflow is related to their noise level during operation, with some handheld and both neck-mounted models able to maintain a low noise level at the highest fan speed.
While the overall performance of 17 tested models has passed the Council's basic safety tests in accordance with international safety standards, one handheld model from Momax was identified as needing improvement in overheating protection as its temperature reached 56.6 degrees during charging.
The Council stated that although the defective model's rise in temperature will not cause combustion or explosion, its battery life might be affected and accelerate battery aging.
Instruction manuals on all models are found to be inadequate, with some failing to place their safety instructions on the front of the product or missing part of the required warnings.
Recommend portable fan brands from the Council including MUJI (HK$58) and Home Coordy (HK$98) have a high price performance, showing there are good options whether consumers prioritize portability or performance.
To ensure the portable fan's sustainability, the Council reminded consumers to avoid overnight charging or fully charging their fan and keeping it within sight during charging.
The Council advises that if any signs of damage, such as unusual smells or sounds, are observed, consumers should immediately cease using and charging their portable fan.
