The strike group, which also includes the missile destroyers Yan’an and Zhanjiang, as well as the missile frigate Yuncheng, drew large crowds as it sailed into Hong Kong waters.
At the waterfront promenade of South Horizons, hundreds of spectators had secured prime spots well in advance. Many expressed immense pride and excitement at seeing China’s domestically built carrier for the first time.
Wong, a resident of Tai Wo, traveled over an hour by bus just to catch a glimpse of the Shandong strike group.
She shared that while she had previously seen warships from other nations, including the UK and the US, this was her first time witnessing one from her homeland.
“I’m thrilled and proud,” she said.
Thirteen-year-old secondary school student Poon was among the early risers, leaving home at around 6am to witness the historic moment.
He recalled seeing the Liaoning aircraft carrier when he was just five years old, accompanied by his father. This time, he came with friends.
“There’s a sense of pride seeing our country’s own carrier strike group,” he said.

Another spectator, Chan, traveled from Shau Kei Wan to South Horizons for the occasion.
Having missed the Liaoning’s visit due to work commitments, he said he was finally able to fulfill his wish.
“It’s a powerful feeling—seeing China’s strength firsthand in my lifetime. I’m truly happy,” he remarked.
