Bakery Chain Taipan Bread & Cakes is allegedly closing three of its branches at Choi Hung, Tai Wai and Whampoa MTR stations owing to outstanding rents.
It is reported that the company has recently found itself embroiled in multiple legal disputes with landlords regarding the overdue rent for several branches and factories, resulting in closures at some locations.
An employee claimed that the three outlets have been in rent arrears for over three months, amounting to a total of HK$1 million.
The Whampoa station outlet was seen with its shutters closed on Saturday (Jun 21), leaving behind empty shelves, a few bags of clutter, and a cash register.
A staff member from a nearby clothing store noted that the bakery was operating normally on Friday, but three employees had packed up and left by Saturday morning.
While a notice regarding lease expiration was posted outside the store, the staff claimed to have no knowledge of any outstanding rent issues.
Although the Choi Hung and Tai Wai outlets remained open on Saturday, staff were seen clearing shelves on Sunday morning with the shop’s gate was half closed.
A staff member stated that the shop is closing due to the lease expiration, but not all branches are being closed, adding that employees would be relocated to other branches.
However, staff from both closing branches declined to comment on any issues related to unpaid wages.
Meanwhile, the MTR Corporation has refused to comment on specific lease issues, noting the arrangements for station shops are in accordance with contractual agreements.
