The vibrant atmosphere surrounding the Hong Kong football team's recent victory against India at the new home ground Kai Tak Stadium has sparked a proposal for the establishment of a football history museum within the Kai Tak Sports Park to promote and expand Hong Kong's sports industry.
The major win last night, which qualified the local representative team for the AFC Asia Cup, sent a crowd of 42,570 spectators at the stadium glowing with pride and vibrancy.
A scholar characterized the atmosphere as "unprecedented" and suggested it could be a golden opportunity to promote local football through the creation of a museum that highlights the city's historical milestones in the sport.
Historic victory ignites pride and opportunity
Professor Lau Wing-chung from the Department of Sport, Physical Education, and Health at Hong Kong Baptist University the significance of the "host city economy" and public engagement in advancing the sports sector.
He recommended that the government establish a football museum showcasing both historical and contemporary local football legends, such as Cheung Chi-tak, Wan Chi-keung, and Leslie Sandro, to further cultivate a sense of pride among fans and encourage support for the local team.
To enhance fan culture surrounding the local squad, Lau proposed that the government and the Hong Kong Football Association support fan clubs in developing team anthems and emblems. Furthermore, he advocated for the establishment of a cheerleading team inspired by Korean culture to effectively engage a wider audience.
Currently, Hong Kong lacks football-related exhibitions or promotional activities, with the most recent event occurring in 2006, organized by the Museum of History.
In addition to football, Lau suggested that the government explore opportunities for organizing island-hopping, canoeing, and windsurfing competitions to foster a sense of belonging and pride among Hong Kong residents while promoting future advancements in the sports industry.
