Martial arts superstar Donnie Yen Chi-tan led the audience in a moment of silence to honor the Tai Po fire victims during the Golden Singa Awards held in Singapore yesterday (Dec 1).
Yen has earlier donated HK$1 million to the Hong Kong Poverty Alleviation Association to support residents affected by the city’s deadliest fire at Wang Fuk Court.
At the inaugural ceremony, Yen was invited as a judge and award presenter. In light of the tragedy, the organizers canceled the red carpet and cocktail reception as a mark of respect for the victims.
Taking the stage with a heavy heart and wearing a black ribbon, Yen acknowledged the devastating fire and led all guests in a moment of silence to pay respects to the victims.
He expressed his heartbreak over the lost lives. “To all the families enduring the unimaginable pain, we mourn with you and stand by you. To the brave firefighters, we see your greatness and extend our sincere gratitude.”
The ceremony awarded several prestigious honors, with mainland actress Song Jia winning Best Actress for “Her Story”, and Hong Kong veteran actor Sean Lau Ching-wan securing Best Actor for “Papa”.
The touching family film garnered five awards -- including Best Screenplay and Best Director. Another Hong Kong production “Twilight of the Warriors: Walled In” received four awards -- including Best Cinematography.
