Samsung to start first semiconductor fabrication plant in Yongin two years sooner than scheduled

Samsung Electronics has moved up the start-up date for the first semiconductor fabrication plant in its Yongin chip cluster to 2029, one to two years earlier than planned, the Yonhap News Agency reported on Sunday. 
The accelerated timeline aligns with the South Korean government's policy of accelerating the development of the Yongin National Industrial Complex.
It was reported that if the plant begins production as scheduled, it will help Samsung respond better to the surge in demand for artificial intelligence chips, and accelerate the formation of a local semiconductor materials, components, and equipment industry ecosystem.
Samsung previously revealed plans to invest 2,030 trillion won (HK$10.58 trillion) in its Pyeongtaek and Yongin semiconductor clusters.
