Stocks traded in Hong Kong and mainland China surged in the morning, driven by tech firms and casino operators, as the eight-day National Day holiday is coming.

Hong Kong’s Hang Seng Index settled at 26,494 at midday, 365 points or 1.4 percent higher than the previous close. The indicator once hit 26,557 in the morning.
The main board turnover amounted to nearly HK$160 billion in the morning session.
The Hang Seng Tech Index stood at 6,277 at noon, a gain of 1.33 percent. Alibaba (9988), the most traded stock in the morning, rose 3 percent, and CATL (3750) marched 4.4 percent to HK$554, a new record high since listing.
Casino operators are another driver, with Sands China (1928) leaping 5.66 percent.
In contrast, New World Development (0017) slumped as much as 10.8 percent to HK$6.99 apiece before narrowing the loss to 2.2 percent and standing at HK$7.67 by noon.
In mainland China, the Shanghai Composite Index inched up 0.1 percent to 3,832 while the Shenzhen Component Index jumped 1.1 percent to 13,355. The ChiNext index also leapt 1.77 percent to 3,207, a fresh high after December 2021.
Mainland stock markets are scheduled to close during the eight-day National Day Holiday through October 8.
