China’s Ministry of Commerce has held talks with US retail giant Walmart on the supermarket chain’s major price cuts request on certain Chinese suppliers to offset tariff costs.
A state-backed media outlet said the request aims to “shift the burden of the US tariff on China to Chinese suppliers and Chinese consumers.”
On March 6, Bloomberg reported that Walmart had asked some Chinese suppliers -- including makers of kitchenware and clothing -- to lower prices by as much as 10 percent for each round of US President Donald Trump’s tariffs.
China’s Chamber Of Commerce for Import & Export of Textiles called for large US retailers to resolve international trade issues fairly and reasonably.
The body said it has received complaints from its members after some US retailers asked Chinese suppliers to cut prices.
Trump’s extra 10 percent levy on Chinese goods took effect on Tuesday of last week, following a 10 percent tariff imposed in February.
