The Geminid meteor shower is set to reach its peak tonight, offering skywatchers in Hong Kong a chance to enjoy one of the most active and reliable meteor displays of the year.
For those unable to venture outdoors, the Hong Kong Space Museum will host a live online broadcast from 9pm to 10pm via YouTube, bringing the spectacle directly to viewers’ screens.
According to the Space Museum, observing conditions tonight are expected to be favorable, with minimal interference from moonlight. This means brighter streaks of light may be more easily spotted as meteors flash across the night sky.
The museum noted on its social media platforms that the radiant point of the Geminids is expected to rise from the northeastern horizon at around 7.30pm. As it climbs higher, the chances of seeing more meteors will increase.
The Geminid meteor shower is known for its relatively slow-moving and often bright meteors, making it a favorite among both seasoned stargazers and casual observers. Under ideal conditions, viewers may be able to spot around 20 to 30 meteors per hour at the peak.
For those planning to watch in person, the Space Museum advises choosing a location with a wide, unobstructed view of the sky and minimal light pollution. No special equipment is needed, as the meteors can be enjoyed with the naked eye under clear skies.
The livestream can be accessed via the Hong Kong Space Museum’s official YouTube channel.
