Cantopop star Eason Chan Yick-Shun announced the postponement of three concerts in Taiwan due to a COVID-19 diagnosis, unsettling rumors circulating online about his alleged death from complications.
The 50-year-old singer tested positive for COVID-19 on Wednesday (May 14) after experiencing discomfort, prompting the organizer to postpone the concert from May 16 to 18 at the Kaohsiung Arena.
Chan shared his regrets on social media, noting "It is miserable… After 12 years of waiting for the Kaohsiung Arena, I never imagined a virus could ruin everything in one night."
Chan also apologized for letting his audience and team down, promising a speedy recovery under medical guidance and returning to the stage as soon as possible.
However, rumors of the singer's passing due to COVID-19 complications quickly went viral, shooting to the top of Weibo's trending topics and sparking heated discussions.
In response to the emerging death rumors, mainland singer Ayuko Ye, a contestant under Chan's mentorship on "Sing! China" Season 2, refutes on Monday (May 19) over the fake news.
Ye criticized the media for disseminating unfounded rumors, describing them as "despicable and ungrounded."
As there was no official response from the singer or his management company, Chan's fans thanked Ye for clarifying the matter.
