With its steadfast commitment to providing Hong Kong with high quality and flexible higher education, Hong Kong Metropolitan University (HKMU) continues to offer open learning programmes as a core part of its education provision.
The School of Open Learning was established by HKMU a year ago to uphold its commitment to providing the best possible open and distance education to students. Targeting the needs of working adults and mature students, its distance-learning and part-time programmes facilitate students’ desire for continuing education, and lifelong engagement in learning through a flexible and effective learning system with high quality curricula.
Officiating at the first anniversary of the School of Opening Learning on August 26, Secretary for Education Dr Choi Yuk-lin said that open and distance education has played a vital role in nurturing local talent over the past three decades. She praised HKMU’s mission of “Education for All”, which has enabled many aspiring learners to gain access to higher education. She said she was delighted that there were over 87,000 graduates of its distance-learning programmes.
HKMU President Prof. Paul Lam Kwan-sing underscored the fact that the University is now the only tertiary institution offering such a broad range of learning support and development opportunities for non full-time students.
“The school focuses on further strengthening our support of off-campus learning for those studying remotely, and also organizes various student activities for holistic personal development,” he elaborated. “Personalized learning is emphasized throughout the entire curriculum, while study support is provided through mobile learning.”
Dr Li Kam-cheong, Dean of School of Open Learning, explained the future direction of the School: “We will continue to strengthen our international network with partners to offer undergraduate and postgraduate programmes, and conduct research for teaching innovation,” he continued. “Additionally, building our international reputation and enhancing our teaching effectiveness are also our key focuses.”
