The HSBC Hong Kong Community Partnership Programme (CPP) is pleased to announce the winners of SMART Community Hackathon 2020 in recognition of the creative work of the secondary school students aimed at supporting disadvantaged groups in society.
With a theme of ‘Support Hong Kong’, the programme aims at addressing the needs of vulnerable groups that have suffered the most from COVID-19 and the social unrest last year, as well as enhancing social cohesion and recovery of the community over time.
“For the second year in a row, the SMART Community Hackathon has provided an excellent platform for our younger generation to apply their creativity, critical thinking and STEM knowledge towards developing practical tools that support our community’s vulnerable groups,” says Huifeng ZHANG, Head of Corporate Sustainability, Asia-Pacific, HSBC.
“I would like to thank all the participating schools, teachers, students, and the public for their tremendous support. COVID-19 has challenged us all, and yet this competition has demonstrated that our students have the ability to innovate with empathy and understanding,” he concludes.
This year, 40 teams from 18 secondary schools have submitted their projects, and half of the teams were selected as finalists with each receiving HK$5,000 subsidy to develop their idea.
Seven projects were awarded the ultimate title in the Hackathon’s five categories for their ingenuity and practical solutions in supporting people with physical disabilities, visual impairments, people experiencing social isolation and the elderly.
