A magnitude 6.1 earthquake struck off the coast of northeastern Taiwan on Friday evening, according to the Central Weather Administration (CWA), with tremors felt across a wide area of the island.
The earthquake occurred at 8.39pm local time. Fortunately, there were no immediate reports of damage or injuries following the seismic event.
The CWA reported that the epicenter of the temblor was located at sea, approximately 38.7 kilometers east-northeast of Yilan County Hall. The quake originated at a depth of 98.3 kilometers.
The highest intensity of the earthquake, measuring 4 on Taiwan's 7-tier intensity scale, was recorded in Yilan County, Hsinchu County, Nantou County, and Hualien County.
Lower intensities, measuring 3 on the same scale, were reported in several other areas, including New Taipei, Taipei, Taoyuan, Hsinchu City, Miaoli County, Taichung, Changhua County, Taitung County, and Chiayi County.
