The physician at Shougang Hospital of Peking University passed away in the early hours last Friday after a 20-month struggle with late-stage lymphoma, leaving behind a poignant final message: "Don’t wait until you’re sick to care for your body."
From rural poverty to top oncologist
Born in an impoverished village in Henan province, Huang rose to academic excellence, graduating top of her class at Nanchang University’s medical school before earning a full scholarship to Peking University for her combined master’s and PhD.
She later became a leading oncologist at Beijing’s Shougang Hospital, where she treated countless patients while also gaining fame online for her accessible cancer prevention advice.
A doctor’s tragic diagnosis
In December 2023, during a routine check-up, Huang discovered she had stage 4 diffuse large B-cell lymphoma, an aggressive cancer that had already spread to her bone marrow.
Despite her medical expertise, she admitted she had overlooked early symptoms—persistent low fever and fatigue—dismissing them as exhaustion from her grueling 60-hour workweeks.
Documenting her fight to the end
Even during treatment, Huang continued educating the public, sharing her journey on social media—from chemotherapy side effects to diet tips and insurance guidance.
Her final video, a sobering reflection on missed warning signs, urged followers: "Regular check-ups matter. Never ignore your body’s signals."
