The tradition kicks off on the 26th day of the first Lunar month, with worshippers believing that their luck and prosperity for the coming year can be enhanced by receiving "loans" from Kwun Yam.
The queue started to form at Fat Kwong Street Playground an hour ahead of time as people eagerly anticipated the kickoff of the annual event at 11pm on Saturday (Feb 22).
Participants make incense offerings and take part in a lucky draw for red packets, each containing the amount of "loans" they are believed to receive from the goddess.
A worshipper surnamed Wong, participating in the tradition at the temple for the third time, said he joined the queue just before 11pm and successfully "borrowed 380 million" in the ritual.
A priority zone was established for individuals aged 70 or above, those with mobility difficulties, pregnant women, and people with disabilities to wait in line.
Additionally, Lin Fa Temple in Causeway Bay and Tin Hau Temple in Shau Kei Wan will remain open overnight until 6 pm on Sunday to facilitate public worship of the goddess.
