The stairs where the LED roses are installed have been cordoned off as well, with a sign that reads: “Work in progress. No entry.”
The installation, costing about HK$500,000, is scheduled to be put on display next Tuesday. It is a part of a campaign by the Home Affairs Department which earlier allocated HK$1 million to each district council to set up photo hotspots.
The white LED roses soon drew discussions after snaps taken by citizens were uploaded online on Wednesday. One asked if anyone had passed away while another said it was like being at a funeral service.
The roses were later found to be covered with canvas in the early hours on Thursday. Kwun Tong district councilor Cheung Ki-tang explained that work is still underway as the display is scheduled next Tuesday and defended that the design doesn’t look like a funeral.
He understands that white flowers may amplify a sense related to death but noted that from an artistic perspective, there is nothing wrong with the design, not to mention the installation is situated near the East Kowloon Cultural Centre.
Some citizens echoed Cheung’s remarks, saying they believe the scene will be spectacular once the LED roses are lit at night.
The Kwun Tong District Office said it is following up with the contractor on the installment of the LED roses and visual effects at day and night.
It expects to complete the installment and officially open the area to public within March, allowing citizens to enjoy this glamorous and harmonious environment in the hustling town center.
