The Director of Fire Services and the Fire Services Department, mourns the loss of a firefighter who passed away while handling a rescue operation in Penny's Bay on Friday morning.
Shortly before noon today near the Inspiration Lake Recreation Centre, a sedan driving along Fantasy Road crashed into a tour bus in another lane, with both vehicles mounting the planters at the roundabout.
The female sedan driver, surnamed Lam, suffered injuries to her face and limbs and was taken to Princess Margaret Hospital for medical attention while in a semi-conscious state, where she later regained full consciousness.
The 39-year-old male tour bus driver, surnamed So, stayed at the scene to assist in the investigation.
During the rescue operation, Yau Yiu-man, attached to Penny's Bay Fire Station, suddenly fainted at the scene of the accident. A colleague immediately performed cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) and applied an automated external defibrillator to perform emergency care.
He was rushed to hospital at around 12 pm and was pronounced dead at around 3 pm after failing to be resuscitated.
Director of Fire Services, Andy Yeung Yan-kin mourned his death and said, "Having been a member of the Fire Services Department for over 31 years, Mr Yau's performance was excellent. He was awarded the Hong Kong Fire Services Long Service Medal - First Clasp, a Certificate of Appreciation by the Chief Secretary for Administration and the Senior Commander's Commendation."
Yeung stated that he is profoundly grieved at the loss of this dedicated and gallant fireman, and all his colleagues are deeply saddened by the loss of such a devoted comrade.
On behalf of all his colleagues, he has also offered the deepest condolences to his family and stated that the Welfare Officer is closely liaising with Yau's family and will render their utmost assistance to help them through this sad and difficult time.
