Police say Tsz Wan Shan murder-suicide stemmed from dispute over noise complaints

Hong Kong police are currently investigating a case of murder-suicide after an 85-year-old woman was found dead outside her Tsz Wan Shan flat with lacerations to her neck and head, with another man found to have committed suicide in a different flat.

A police spokesman said on Thursday that their investigation revealed that the two had filed more than 10 noise complaints against each other before the tragedy. The two had no prior records of mental illnesses.

Police believed the woman was assaulted and died from her wounds. An axe suspected to be connected to the case was seized in the corridor of the scene.

The spokesman said the force received a report at around 4 pm yesterday that the elderly woman Tam was lying unconscious on the 15th floor of Ching Yuk House at Tsz Ching Estate. She was rushed to Kwong Wah Hospital and was certified dead at 4.46 pm.

Six lacerations, each measuring 10 centimeters, were found on the woman’s head, while three others were also found on her neck.

The spokesman said the force’s investigation directed them to the man’s flat at around 5.30 pm, with the 66-year-old man found hanged inside his 14th-floor flat using a power extension cord. He was also rushed to Kwong Wah Hospital and was certified dead at 6.42 pm.

The spokesman confirmed the incident was being dealt with as a murder-suicide by officers from the Wong Tai Sin district crime squad, he also called on people with information to contact the police.

It is understood that both of them lived alone, with the woman living above. He complained about noises protruding from her flat but the man was also said to have retaliated by poking the ceiling.
