Forty-seven passengers were hospitalized after a KMB bus rammed into a curb when traveling along Ching Cheung Road, almost flipping onto its side. The driver fell into a coma after the crash.
The incident that happened at around 9am on Monday saw the Route 290A double-decker crashed into road barriers near Nob Hill when heading towards Tsuen Wan along Ching Cheung Road and tilted.
Police said 77 passengers were on board at the time of the accident. Around 20 of them were trapped on the upper deck after the crash. The driver was also trapped in his seat and fell into a coma after the impact.
Firefighters managed to rescue all passengers around noon. Among the 47 brought to the hospital for treatment, four women and two men sustained more severe injuries.
KMB said the driver sustained minor injuries and had since regained consciousness. The driver was later arrested for dangerous driving.
The bus firm noted that the driver has more than two years of experience driving the same route, while the driver had his rest day two days ago.
It said the bus had undergone routine checking last Thursday and the company would fully cooperate with the investigation.
Due to the accident, all lanes of Ching Cheung Road (Tsuen Wan bound) near Lai Chi Kok Park are closed to all traffic, with traffic congested. The Transport Department advised motorists to use alternative routes.
