This summer, May Yeung, visual arts and political science graduate of the University of Chicago, as well as a postmodern pop-art sculptor, installation artist and photographer, curates a sculpture exhibition for Dutch Days in Hong Kong with the theme of sustainable urban development.
The exhibition is supported by the Netherlands Consulate General in Hong Kong and Macao, Dutch Chamber of Commerce in Hong Kong, Hong Kong Design Centre and Wofoo Social Enterprises.
The exhibition will take place on 4th - 19th August 2022 at Kornhill Plaza and Kornhill Apartments, promoting ocean and water resource conservation, and advocating culture exchange and inclusion. The exhibition will allow the public to celebrate the summer by fusing the cultures of Eastern and Western World.
“Happy Generations Tulips that symbolize perfect love is a key component of the artwork as it reminds all of us that the joy in life is to love and be loved,” Yeung remarks. “Golden Birdwing Butterflies that are commonly found in Hong Kong dance amongst the tulips, signifying the cultural exchange between Hong Kong and the Netherlands.”
“Blossom Love Sculpture also features the windmill that serves water pumping purposes in the Netherlands,” she adds. “With 26% of its land below sea level, the country prospers with the use of the windmill.”
At the same time, Hong Kong Coastline Photo Exhibition also highlights areas in Hong Kong where the Netherlands plays a key role in water management, including West Kowloon Cultural District. The exhibition is co-curated by Hong Kong Design Institute, with the aim of raising awareness in water management and sustainability.
