Au Nok-hin gets 9 weeks’ jail after review over sentence for loudspeaker assaults on police officers

Pro-democracy lawmaker Au Nok-hin has been jailed for 9 weeks for assaulting two police officers with a loudhailer at an anti-government rally in Hong Kong in 2019, after prosecutors won another review of non-custodial sentences.

Au was previously found guilty of his charges but spared jail with the court ordering him to perform 140 hours of community work.

Au was said to have damaged the hearing of one officer and attacked another during a stand-off between protesters and police in Mong Kok in the early hours of July 8, 2019.

The Court of Appeal on Tuesday sided with the prosecution in finding the trial magistrate had erred in principle in sentencing Au last April and imposing a “manifestly inadequate” order of 140 hours of community service on an assault charge.
