The number of people infected with the coronavirus in Hong Kong reached 1,000 today slightly more than three months after the first two infected people were identified.
A mainland man who came to Hong Kong by express rail from Wuhan, the coronavirus ground zero, on January 22, and a 56-year-old Hong Kong man who flew in from the Hubei capital, were the first two to be identified as infected with the highly infectious, rapidly spreading virus. By then 17 people had died in the Chinese city and an emergency had been declared.
The first death in Hong Kong, a resident, was recorded on February 4.
Health officials said today 11 more have been confirmed as infected in Hong Kong. One of them was linked to the All Night Long bar in Tsim Sha Tsui.
The cumulative number of confirmed cases now exceeds 1,000.
The newly confirmed cases include six women and five men, aged between 19 and 59 years.
Among them, 10 have overseas travel histories. Two are students and some patients are related to previously-diagnosed cases.
A mainlander who arrived from the new coronavirus epicenter Wuhan in Hubei province, was one of the first two to be diagnosed as infected. He was sent to Queen Elizabeth Hospital in Jordan.
