Siobhan Haughey stamped her authority in the pool by becoming a double Olympic medal winner in Hong Kong when she swam to silver in the 100 meter freestyle finals at the Tokyo Aquatic Center on Friday morning.
She also marked her name in the Asian records book in the event, swimming a determined final 10 meters for her second silver and the new milestone.
She clocked 52.27 behind Australian Emma McKeon who won gold in 51.96, while also setting up a new Olympic record in the finals. Australia's Cate Campbell came in at 52.52 for the bronze. Canadian Penny Oleksiak was fourth.
The finals was held at 10:59am Tokyo time.
Haughey on Wednesday became Hong Kong's first Olympic medalist in swimming, when she won silver in the 200 meter freestyle in Tokyo in an Asian record time. She also improved on her own record.
Haughey thanked her team members for the support when they all agreed to forgo the 4X200m relay, and the Hong Kong public for their cheers.
Hong Kong has so far bagged three Olympic medals in Tokyo, including the fencing gold, silver, and bronze.
Haughey will also compete in the 50 meter event tonight.
In a statement, the Chief Executive Carrie Lam Cheng Yuet-ngor underlined the fact that "this is the first time that a Hong Kong athlete has won two medals at the same Olympic Games.''
