Opera Hong Kong is proud to present La Traviata (“The Fallen Woman”) , Giuseppe Verdi’s most immediate opera, set in what was the composer’s “present day”. A touching yet tragic love story, the work is also a forceful indictment of class bigotry and gender prejudice that still resonates today, a story all the more poignant and credible at a time when pestilence once again cuts a deadly swathe through society.
The opera is directed by award-winning director Jean-Louis Grinda, General Director of Opéra de Monte-Carlo since 2007, along with Renato Palumbo, world-class conductor, who has been conferred the honor of “Cavaliere della Repubblica italiana” (knight of the Italian Republic) for his artistic merits.
Venera Gimadieva, a Russian soprano, debuted her Violetta Valéry in La Traviata to enormous acclaim and it became one of her signature roles. Stacey Alleaume, an accomplished Australian-Mauritian soprano who was awarded the prestigious AOAC Dame Joan Sutherland Scholarship, will share the role of Violetta Valéry.
Alfredo will be played by Kang Wang, a grand finalist in the 2017 Cardiff Singer of the World competition and 2nd prize winner of the 2017 International Hans Gabor Belvedere Singing Competition in Moscow, Russia, and Mario Chang, who played Alfredo in La Traviata at Washington National Opera and the Atlanta Opera in recent seasons. Stephen Powell and Luca Grassi will take on the role as Germont.
Featuring these most sought-after overseas artists, the opera will be staged from 5 to 9 Oct, 2022, at the Grand Theater of Hong Kong Cultural Center.
