A federal judge, Vasily Vetlugin, 40, was brutally killed on August 14, 2025, outside Kamyshin City Court in Volgograd, Russia, in a suspected jealousy-driven attack. Vetlugin was shot with a Saiga semi-automatic rifle, stabbed multiple times, and mutilated, with his severed genitals placed in his mouth and a knife lodged in his eye, according to local reports.

The suspect, Sergey Kibalnikov, 47, a transport business owner, was detained at the scene and confessed to the murder, police sources said. Kibalnikov allegedly believed Vetlugin was having an affair with his wife, Yelena Kibalnikova, 40, the judge’s court secretary. An eyewitness reported that Kibalnikov ambushed Vetlugin as he left the courthouse, shooting at his car before chasing and attacking him.
The Russian Investigative Committee has launched a criminal case, charging Kibalnikov with murder committed with particular cruelty and illegal firearm possession. Despite some claims, authorities clarified the suspect is not a serviceman but a businessman. The gruesome crime scene, captured in viral images on Russian social media, shocked the public.
