Hutchison Telecommunications Hong Kong (0215) will roll out 5.5G network services at major Hong Kong venues including Kai Tak Sports Park to support the SAR government’s drive to boost the mega event economy.
The CK Hutchison (0001) unit, aiming to support the development of Northern Metropolis, is also expanding 5G coverage in the district.
Chief executive Kenny Koo Sing-fai revealed that other major venues to receive coverage include the West Kowloon Cultural District and the Hong Kong Convention and Exhibition Centre.
Koo said on Thursday that the company will also deploy an agentic artificial intelligence system to measure and enhance user experience by evaluating network performance in real time.
Highlighting the importance of adapting to different usage scenarios, Koo cited a recent network disruption of other operators at Lok Ma Chau Station, where mobile data traffic overwhelmed the network.
The issue occurred during the second day of the Labour Day golden week on May 2, when mobile and Wi-Fi services at Futian Port and the station struggled to handle the surge of passengers simultaneously activating QR code tickets via their smartphones.
Koo also pointed to recent concerts at the Kai Tak Sports Park as an example of rising data demand, noting that the venue’s mobile data usage was equivalent to uploading more than 7.5 million photos.
He added that 5G upload speeds inside the main stadium are now three times faster than those on 4G.
To mark the fifth anniversary of its 5G services, the telecom firm announced a range of promotional offers, including a three-month fee waiver for new 5G subscribers.
