The 11th World Games was concluded in Birmingham, Alabama on Sunday, where Hong Kong bagged its first-ever gold medal at the games, along with four bronze medals.

Hong Kong’s first-ever World Games gold medal goes to 23-year-old snooker player Cheung Ka-wai, after he defeated Egyptian Abdelrahman Shahin three frames to one on Sunday.
The former U18 Snooker World Champion Cheung beat Britain’s Wayne Brown (3-0), Pakistan’s Ahsan Ramzan (3-1) and Qatar’s Ali Alobaidli (3-0) to reach the finals.
After claiming gold, Cheung said he is “very proud to represent Hong Kong to join the World Games” and it is his first time playing.
When asked about how he viewed his overall performance in the whole tournament, he said he was “really nervous in every match and each match is a very short best of five”, adding that “every opportunity matters”.
Cheung told reporters that he didn’t even know his gold medal was going to be Hong Kong’s first and it was amazing to achieve history in his first time representing the city.
As for the four bronze medalists, one of them is Olympic bronze medalist Grace Lau Mo-sheung, who came third in the women’s karate event.
The other three bronze medalists at the World Games for Hong Kong were wushu athletes Lee Wing-yung, Yeung Chung-hei and Michelle Yeung. Lee and Michelle Yeung climaed bronze in the Women's Taolu Nanquan and Nandao and Women's Taolu Daoshu and Gunshu events respectively, while Yeung Chung-hei claimed bronze in the Men's Taolu Taijiquan and Taijijian event.
In previous world games, Hong Kong claimed 3 silver medals and a bronze. The number of medals won this year already beats the total number of medals won in all the previous world games combined.
Meanwhile, in Muay Thai, 30-year-old female fighter Alex Tsang Ching-yee finished 4th after losing in the bronze medal match by 17-20 to Swiss’s Patricia Axling.
In squash, Cheng Nga-ching finished 9th in women’s singles, while her teammate Fung Ching-hei finished 17th in women’s singles. Lam Yat-ting finished 17th in men’s singles.
In wushu, Ngan Lok-man finished fifth in Men’s Taolu Nanquan & Nangun.
In orienteering, female runners Lam Cho-yu, 24, and Leung Ka-ki, 29, finished 26th and 30th in the sprint, and 28th and 29th in the middle distance respectively. As for the men’s event, 23-year-old Li Chun-ho and 30-year-old Yu Tsz-wai finished 37th and 35th in the sprint, and 34th and 32nd in the middle distance respectively. The four also competed in the mixed relay where they finished 12th as a team.
In speed skating, Vanessa Natalie Wong finished 15th in the 15,000m race, 20th in women’s 100m sprint and 14th in the 10,000m race. Her teammate, Karrine Tam Tsz-ching, finished 12th in the 100m sprint, 12th in the 1-lap, 14th in the time trial, 14th in the 500m sprint and 25th in the 1000m sprint.
The Hong Kong team also competed in drone racing, where Lai Ka-ki finished 30th.
In previous world games, Hong Kong claimed in total 3 silver medals and a bronze. The number of medals won this year already surpassed the total tally in all previous world games combined.
