On the second day of the 15th National Games, Hong Kong rowers Wong Sheung-yee and Leung King-wan placed sixth in the women’s coxless pair A final on Tuesday.
Competing in lane six over a 1,500-meter course, the duo — who won bronze at last year’s Asian Rowing Championships — opened with a high stroke rate to keep pace with the five other crews.
However, they began to fall behind after the 1,000-meter mark, ultimately finishing in 5 minutes and 38.31 seconds, 21.01 seconds behind the gold medalists from Liaoning.
The silver and bronze medals went to teams from Jiangsu and Zhejiang, respectively.
After the race, Wong described the event as “a final examination,” noting the fierce competition among top-tier rowers.
Leung echoed her teammate’s sentiments, acknowledging that the National Games featured a much higher standard compared with Asian-level events.
“We’ve had three races recently, about one every two weeks, and this final one was actually our best performance,” Leung said. “I hope the longer we row together, the better we become.”
Looking ahead, the Hong Kong pair will now focus on preparations for next year’s Asian Games.
