With staffing and tourism facilities slowly returning to normal, inbound tourism to Hong Kong has significantly rebounded in recent months, according to Trip.com (9961).
Global flight bookings to the city jumped 57.2 times year-on-year from the beginning of this year to April 10, with those coming from Singapore and Thailand soaring 330 and 279 times from 12 months ago, respectively, the travel service provider said.
The number of bookings for flights from Europe (UK, France, Italy, Spain, and Germany) to Hong Kong between March 15 and June 30 also rocketed 13.62 times year-on-year, said the travel website. The most popular route is from the UK to Hong Kong, followed by Germany and France.
A similar surge was seen in air ticket bookings from the mainland to the SAR after China lifted its travel restrictions earlier this year. Flight bookings between the two places grew by 879.7 percent from January to April 10, compared to a year ago, with the top five departure cities being Hangzhou, Beijing, Chengdu, Shanghai, and Nanjing, Trip.com said.
This came as Airport Authority Hong Kong said the airport handled 2.8 million passengers last month, more than 28 times the number recorded in March 2022. Average daily passenger traffic continued to increase over the first three weeks of this month as the number reached 100,000 per day.
