More than 180 Hong Kong voice actors have issued a joint statement opposing the unauthorised use of their voice samples for artificial intelligence training and synthesis.
The statement from the Labour Union of Dubbing of Hong Kong declares that no organisation, enterprise, or individual may record, collect, use, modify, edit, or copy voice samples of the signatories without explicit written consent from the individual or the union. This applies to uses including generative AI training, voice simulation, speech synthesis, or other similar technologies.
The actors said they "firmly oppose all unauthorised acquisition and use of voice data," viewing such actions as a serious infringement of their voice rights, professional dignity, and creative autonomy.
The statement warns that violators will face legal action, including demands to cease infringement, compensation for losses, and public apologies.
Signatories include Sharon Leung Siu-ha, known for voicing the character Shizuka in the Cantonese version of "Doraemon," and prominent voice actor Anakin Wong Wing-cheung.
