The Anti-Deception Coordination Centre on Tuesday reminded the public not to rashly scan QR codes on any unknown delivery parcels and must not provide bank or credit card information, urging them to stay alert to common scams involving paid task orders.
The centre said that it has recently received multiple inquiries from the public about receiving SF Express parcels of unknown origin containing “Taobao” lottery tickets, QR codes, and free face masks.
It also reminded the public that even if a stranger can easily state their personal information, it does not mean they are genuine law enforcement, as fraudsters can obtain personal data through illegal means.
If in doubt, call the “Anti-Scam Helpline 18222” anti-deception enquiry hotline for advice.
Taobao earlier told Sing Tao Headline, a sister publication of The Standard that the related lottery coupons are not an official activity.
The company stressed it strictly protects users’ personal data security and does not mail similar flyers or materials to consumers, reminding the public to stay vigilant if they receive parcels of unknown origin to avoid being scammed.
