A 49-year-old electrician lost his life on Saturday in a tragic workplace incident at the Wo Mei sewage treatment plant expansion site in Sai Kung, prompting the Drainage Services Department (DSD) to take swift and decisive action to shutdown the site.

The worker, surnamed Tam, was discovered unconscious around 10am after his clothing became entangled in a power drill, wrapping fatally around his neck.
Despite immediate rescue and hours of emergency treatment at Tseung Kwan O Hospital, he was pronounced dead at approximately 8 p.m.
Director of Drainage Services Ringo Mok Wing-cheong expressed profound sadness over the tragedy and extended the department’s deepest condolences to the bereaved family, pledging that the contractor would provide all necessary support.
The department has ordered the main contractor and all subcontractors to suspend the affected works immediately, conduct exhaustive safety audits, and submit a detailed investigation report into the cause of the accident.
DSSD officials confirmed they will fully cooperate with police, the Labour Department, and other authorities while the probe continues.
