As Hong Kong's Legislative Council election nomination period hits its midpoint, Olympic gold medalist Vivian Kong Man-wai has become the most buzzed-about newcomer, reportedly set to contest the tourism functional constituency after suspending her Hong Kong Jockey Club role to campaign full-time.
The 31-year-old fencing star, who made history with a gold medal at the Paris Olympics before retiring, joined the Jockey Club as an external affairs assistant manager.
She has since appeared at public events, including a June Hong Kong National Security Law seminar and youth programs.
Initial talk of a district direct election run fizzled out due to her foreign passport—a disqualification for most seats—and slim chances against established groups.
However, the tourism sector is one of 12 functional constituencies allowing foreign residency.
Incumbent Perry Yiu Pak-leung is reportedly shifting to the Election Committee seat, clearing the path.
While Kong’s youth and image are strengths, some in the pro-establishment camp question her lack of industry ties to travel agencies, hotels, or airlines, and debate the urgency of her political entry.
The Jockey Club confirmed it has no role in her campaign and placed her on unpaid leave from November 1.
