Hong Kong Chief Executive John Lee Ka-chiu inspected key emergency facilities on Tuesday (September 23) as Super Typhoon Ragasa approached the city, underscoring the government's preparedness for significant threats from the storm.
His itinerary included the Drainage Services Department’s (DSD) Emergency Control Centre and a temporary shelter at the Nam Cheong District Community Centre.
At the DSD centre, Lee was briefed on operational procedures and an artificial intelligence flood monitoring system that uses CCTV combined with AI technology to automatically identify flood incidents. He interacted with staff, including the team operating powerful pumping robots.
The government's flood-prevention capabilities have been recently strengthened with the arrival of four additional pumping robots on Monday, bringing the total number deployed across various districts to ten. Lee praised frontline personnel for their contributions during severe weather and urged them to prioritize their personal safety.
Subsequently, Lee visited the Nam Cheong District Community Centre, where a temporary shelter had opened at 8 a.m.. He inspected the facility, which is equipped with mattresses, blankets, and food for residents. A dedicated area has been set up to protect female citizens' privacy.
The Chief Executive also met with several members of the Sham Shui Po Community Care Team, who shared details of their preparatory work. This included door-to-door visits to disseminate typhoon information, provide shelter details, and assist elderly individuals living alone. Lee expressed his gratitude and encouraged them to continue their efforts.
