The Transport Department officially launched Hong Kong’s first electronic driving license on September 15, enabling all 2.5 million license holders in the city to access a free mobile app containing a legally recognized digital version of their driving credentials.
The e-Driving License app supports full, learner, probationary, temporary, and instructor licenses.
Identity verification is available through two pathways: Hong Kong ID holders can log in via the “iAM Smart” platform, while non-Hong Kong ID holders may use their Transport Department Licensing E-Services account.
Once authenticated, the digital license serves as a legal alternative to the physical card and may be presented to police during routine checks.
The digital version displays the same personal and vehicle entitlement details as its physical counterpart and uses a color-coded system for quick visual reference: blue indicates a fully valid license, yellow denotes partial validity (e.g., some vehicle categories have expired), and red signals full expiration.
Security has been a central focus in the app’s design. It incorporates identity authentication, a dynamic watermark, screenshot prevention, and an encrypted, time-sensitive QR code to prevent misuse.
Each account is bound to one smartphone at a time, and the app is available for free on the Apple App Store, Google Play, and Huawei App Gallery.
While the issuance of physical licenses will continue unchanged, the e-license offers immediate access for those applying or renewing online—eliminating mailing delays.
The Transport Department will also notify mainland Chinese and international authorities of the digital format’s legitimacy.
