Hong Kong's Kai Tak Sports Park made football history on Thursday by hosting the first-ever overseas North London derby between Arsenal and Tottenham Hotspur, marking the marquee finale of the "Hong Kong Football Festival 2025."
The unprecedented matchup sent waves of excitement through the city, with fans arriving over two hours early despite the sweltering July heat.
The stadium pulsed with anticipation as Arsenal supporters, who outnumbered their Spurs counterparts, created a sea of red. Lifelong fans like Yip and So expressed their exhilaration about seeing their team play a derby in Hong Kong.
Yip marveled at the overwhelming Arsenal presence, while So highlighted the anticipation surrounding Victor Gyokeres, Arsenal's record signing. So mentioned that every Gunner was eager to witness their new #14 make history, especially given his record-breaking jersey sales.
Despite being fewer in number, Tottenham's supporters made their presence felt. A veteran fan surnamed Wong, who has supported Spurs for 40 years, shared that he had traveled to London previously but prioritized seeing Son Heung-min this time.
He noted that, as Asia's football icon, this might be the last opportunity to watch Son in a Spurs shirt, adding emotional weight to the occasion.
Pregame festivities set the stage
Hours before kickoff, the stadium concourse transformed into a football carnival. Spurs fans, though outnumbered, defiantly sang club anthems outside the gates, not backing down from the overwhelming numbers of Gunners on site.
