All competition venues have been fully completed for the upcoming National Games, as organizing committee director Huang Mingzhong said over 90 percent of the venues in Guangdong are existing facilities, making this year’s Games the fewest newly-built venues.
The 15th National Games, slated for November 9, will be co-hosted by Guangdong, Hong Kong and Macau for the first time.
Huang revealed that an estimated 36,000 athletes, 45,000 volunteers, and 4,000 journalists from across the country will participate, making it the largest-ever edition of the national games and para games in terms of scale.
He indicated that the number of athletes alone surpasses that of the 2024 Paris Olympics.
A total of 105 venues will be used across the three regions, with 89 in Guangdong, nine in Hong Kong, and seven in Macao. In Guangdong, all permanent venues are ready, while six temporary venues will be completed 15 to 20 days before the Games.
Huang highlighted that this year’s event is marked by its “new, large, and numerous” features — a first-of-its-kind tri-regional co-hosting model, the biggest scale in history, and the widest distribution of host cities.
Guangdong Division authorities stated most finals and key competitions will be scheduled for weekday evenings and weekends to ensure the public can attend in person or watch live broadcasts to enjoy the games.
The authorities also noted that the venues are remarkable for simplicity, green and low-carbon practices, shared usage, cultural elements, and technological applications.
