Ocean Park announces loss of beloved dolphin Rita at age 24

Rita, a female Indo-Pacific Bottlenose Dolphin at Ocean Park, has died at the age of 24, as announced by the theme park last night. 

The park reported that the dolphin exhibited symptoms of fatigue and a decreased appetite on Friday. Despite prompt tests, comprehensive examinations, and round-the-clock care provided by the staff, her condition deteriorated, ultimately leading to her death on Sunday afternoon.

A preliminary autopsy has been conducted to determine the cause of death, with further laboratory tests still underway.

Ocean Park described Rita as an energetic animal ambassador, welcoming visitors at the Marine Mammal Breeding and Research Centre next to the park's Veterinary Centre.

The park expressed gratitude for the marine conservation messages Rita shared with visitors, stating that she will be fondly remembered.

According to reports, Rita was transferred from Friguia Park in Tunisia in 2012 and gave birth to a male calf named Rati in September 2015.
