Henderson Land Development has announced funeral arrangements for its founder, Lee Shau-kee, who passed away peacefully on March 17 at the age of 97.
The influential billionaire, awarded the Grand Bauhinia Medal, will be honored with Buddhist rites at Hong Kong Funeral Home this weekend before being laid to rest in his ancestral hometown of Shunde.
Services will begin this Sunday at Hong Kong Funeral Home, where a private vigil will be held for family and close associates. The following day will feature a public memorial before Lee begins his final journey to his ancestral home of Shunde for burial.
Henderson announced that a 74-strong committee, comprising Hong Kong’s leader, Beijing officials and other city heavyweights, has been set up to prepare for the funeral.
Prominent members of the committee include Zheng Yanxiong, director of the central government’s liaison office in Hong Kong, his deputy Yin Zonghua, and former Hong Kong chief executives Tung Chee-hwa and Leung Chun-ying.
Incumbent Chief Executive John Lee Ka-chiu, Chief Secretary Eric Chan Kwok-ki, Financial Secretary Paul Chan Mo-po, Secretary of Justice Paul Lam Ting-kwok, Legislative Council president Andrew Leung Kwan-yuen and Executive Council convenor Regina Ip Lau Suk-yee are also in the committee.
Presidents of major universities are also among the committee members, including Zhang Xiang of the University of Hong Kong, Dennis Lo Yuk-ming of Chinese University and Nancy Yip Yuk-yu of the Hong Kong Science and Technology University.
