The Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST) is dedicated to fostering an inclusive and supportive workplace through the implementation of flexible and family-friendly policies. In a recent initiative, the university has introduced a weekly work-from-home day and special leave options to enhance work-life balance and promote an employee-centric culture.
Since the onset of the pandemic, work-from-home arrangements have become more prevalent. Recognizing the influence of rapidly advancing technology on the modern work environment, HKUST has become the first publicly funded university to formally adopt a flexible work location policy.
This initiative is part of a broader strategy to attract and retain exceptional talent. Starting in October, HKUST employees can opt to work remotely one day each week, depending on their job responsibilities.
Additionally, to boost community engagement, HKUST has introduced four days of special leave annually for employees to engage in volunteer services, wellness initiatives, and programs that promote diversity and equal opportunities.
Staff members are encouraged to either organize their own volunteer activities or participate in those recognized by the university. This not only enhances individual well-being but also strengthens team cohesion.
Since the implementation of these policies in November 2022, over 170 employees have participated in various volunteer activities, including visits to elderly homes, beach cleanups, and food-saving programs.
HKUST is planning to introduce additional initiatives such as urban planting and food waste recycling to further promote sustainability and support its net-zero action plan.
Tam Kar-yan, Vice President for Administration and Business at HKUST, emphasized the importance of people in making a university great. "Our flexible working plan reflects our commitment to create an environment where our staff can thrive," he stated.
The initiative aims to allow staff to contribute to the university’s reputation for excellence and innovation while managing their family and work commitments effectively. Ultimately, the goal is to enhance productivity and retain top talent.
