Manfred Man Ka-leung said his stable star Lucky Sweynesse will stick to sprinting this year, despite the temptation to avoid Ka Ying Rising at next month’s Hong Kong International Races.
Man admitted that the thought of running Lucky Sweynesse over a mile for the first time in the Hong Kong Mile in order to swerve David Hayes’ sprinting superstar had crossed his mind.
But after plenty of consideration, the trainer says he will crack on with 1,200-meter contests in this weekend’s Group 2 Jockey Club Sprint and next month’s Group 1 Hong Kong Sprint.
“We thought about it, but I think 1,200 is best for him,” Man told The Standard. “We have to run against [Ka Ying Rising], it’s one of those things. At least I know my horse is in good form and hopefully he can give his best.”
Lucky Sweynesse kept on reasonably well behind Ka Ying Rising on his first run of the season before failing to fire in the Group 1 Sprinters Stakes in Japan last time out.
