Outbound passenger traffic was steady at Shenzhen Bay Port on Monday (Feb 16) as residents headed to the mainland ahead of the Lunar New Year holiday. Travelers reported fast clearance and minimal queues.
On-site observations in the morning showed a continuous flow of outbound travelers, with processing remaining orderly. Inbound traffic was lighter, with several arrivals describing border checks as quick and convenient.
A resident said he was travelling to Shenzhen to meet friends and planned to return on Lunar New Year’s Day. Cross-border prices were not significantly cheaper despite exchange rate differences.
Another resident said he was heading to Dapeng New District, Shenzhen, with family for a three-day holiday, citing larger venues and shopping malls as attractions.
A student said he was returning to Fujian to spend the festival with family and would come back shortly before the new school term.
A returnee said mainland New Year celebrations had a strong festive atmosphere, adding that his inbound clearance in the morning was smooth.
The Hong Kong Immigration Department had estimated about 11.38 million passenger trips through all control points between Feb 14 and Feb 23. Land departures peaked on Feb 14, while inbound traffic is expected to peak on Feb 22.
