The Highways Department announced that its Central Kowloon Route project has won the Grand Award in the “Road and Railway Projects” category, while its self-developed Road Defect Detection System received a certificate of merit in the “Industrial, Systems and Innovation” category at the HKIHT Awards 2025.
Director of Highways Tony Yau Kwok-ting led a team to attend the awards presentation ceremony hosted by the Hong Kong Institute of Highways and Transportation (HKIHT) earlier on January 14 to receive the two honors.
The department stated that the HKIHT Awards aim to recognize outstanding achievements in the industry in the areas of road and railway projects, industrial advancements, systematic improvement, and innovative technologies and initiatives.
The Central Kowloon Route is a large-scale project connecting West Kowloon to East Kowloon via a 4.7-kilometer trunk road. The project has adopted multiple advanced technologies, earning wide recognition from the industry.
Meanwhile, the Road Defect Detection System uses artificial intelligence (AI) technology for automatic road defect detection. The AI model is capable of identifying cracks and discoloured road markings from images captured by a vehicle-based camera system, achieving more than 90 percent accuracy.
