At least four people, including a firefighter, have been killed while seven others were injured in a massive fire that spread across multiple blocks of a housing estate in Tai Po on Wednesday.
The blaze reportedly broke out at 2.52pm at Wang Cheong House, Wang Fuk Court and escalated to a No.5 alarm fire at 6.22pm.
At least two firefighters were injured while battling the flames. One of them, surnamed Ho and aged 37, was rushed unconscious to Prince of Wales Hospital and later succumbed to his injuries.
Fire Services Director Andy Yeung Yan-kin arrived at the hospital by 5pm to assess the situation. Yeung said Ho served as a firefighter for nine years and was stationed at Sha Tin Fire Station.
"I am profoundly grieved at the loss of this dedicated and gallant fireman. All of our colleagues are deeply saddened by the loss of such a devoted comrade. On behalf of all our colleagues, I have offered the deepest condolences to his family," Yeung said.
The rescue operation is ongoing, with the Fire Services Department urging residents to stay clear of the area for safety.
