Chief Executive John Lee Ka-chiu on Monday condemned Japanese leaders for making "extremely erroneous" remarks on Taiwan, affirming that the SAR government will fully endorse China's diplomatic stance.
Lee's comments came in response to Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi's assertions made during a November 7 parliamentary session that triggered strong backlash from Beijing, leading to suspended Japanese agricultural exports to China and mass cancellations of Chinese tourist bookings to Japan.
Speaking to the press this morning (Nov 24), Lee slammed Japan for challenging the post-war international order and severely damaging the Sino-Japanese exchanges.
The city leader stated the government is closely monitoring the situation and will ensure all measures to safeguard national dignity and the interests of the Hong Kong people.
He added that the Security Bureau has updated the Outbound Travel Alert (OTA), reminding Hong Kong residents traveling to Japan or currently in the country to remain vigilant and prioritize their safety.
Meanwhile, local airlines will also provide flexible options for passengers traveling to and from Japan to adjust their itineraries.
