A Hong Kong woman was deceived into transferring HK$1.5 million to a scammer who pretended to be popular local singer Jay Fung, after the two developed an online romantic relationship.
A woman in Hong Kong fell victim to an elaborate romance scam after a fraudster posing as Cantopop artist Jay Fung contacted her via Facebook and later moved their conversation to LINE.
Posing as the singer, the scammer quickly established a romantic connection with the victim before convincing her to invest in a fake investment fund.
The imposter promoted what he called the "Jay Fung Personal Investment Fund," promising returns of up to 40 percent in a short period.
He further sweet-talked the victim by suggesting they could save the returns to “buy a home together.”
Convinced by the proposal, the woman proceeded to transfer over HK$1 million in cash and an additional HK$500,000 worth of Tether (USDT) into bank accounts provided by the scammer.
It was only when the fraudster attempted to ask for more money that the victim’s family grew suspicious and intervened, alerting the police.
According to authorities, the scammer had left multiple clues that should have raised doubts—including the fact that the so-called investment fund was unverified and that the associated bank account was a personal one.
However, the victim, blinded by affection, failed to recognize these red flags.
Police are reminding the public to remain vigilant when engaging with people online, especially if the conversation turns to money or investment opportunities.
They stress the importance of thoroughly understanding the nature and risks of any investment platform or product before transferring funds.
Additionally, the public is encouraged to use tools such as the Scameter available on the Cyber Defender website or its mobile app to screen suspicious phone numbers, account details, or other identifiers before engaging further.
